Summertime Memories

Summertime Memories

Summertime brings moments that become lasting memories, like the instantly recognizable jingle of the ice cream truck. I can still hear the tune of my neighborhood ice cream truck that used to drive by on summer evenings.

I remember being able to hear the music long before I could see the large white truck plastered with images of ice cream treats. My favorite treat was the push up pop with the ice cream sandwich coming in a close second.

I used to try to figure out which street the truck was on and I would wait for what seemed like forever for that truck to drive down my street. I would listen to hear which direction it was going and one evening I was sure the driver forgot to come down our road. I heard the truck going away and I was heartbroken.

My Dad scooped me up in his arms and ran like the wind to get to the main road to flag down the driver. I remember my blonde curls tickling my face as Dad ran down the road with me in his arms. We got to the main road just as the truck turned the corner and my Dad called out for him to stop.

He stopped!

I got a push up pop and walked back home hand in hand with my Dad. What a night.

Think back to summers when you were young. What were you doing? Were you inside playing Farmville on the computer or outside running around? What did you love to do? Did you sketch a hopscotch board with chalk on the sidewalk? Did you chase lightning bugs and squeal when you heard the chimes of the ice cream truck?

Did you go on a family vacation? Did you all cram in the car and drive to the shore? Were you busy texting on a keyboard or were you engaged in conversation? Did you watch a DVD playing on a screen hooked to the headrest of the car or were you playing I-spy?

Did you swing on a swing in the playground trying to touch the trees? Did you play with neighborhood friends? Did you swim in a neighbor’s pool? Did you head home when the street lights came on?

How did you feel? Relaxed? Joyful? Care-free? Playful? Creative? Happy?

As the years pass and we have more demands on our time we can lose some of that summer fun…but we can re-capture some of that summer fun today!

Don’t put it off, don’t plan to get to it later, don’t wait- autumn will be here before you know it. Do just one thing today to bring back some of that summer fun.

Go to the park, play hopscotch (yes really), get an ice cream from the truck. Stop waiting and start living deliciously!
