Why I’m Boiling Rosemary…

This could have also been called, “Why my house smells like Christmas when it’s 103 degrees outside.”

Turns out Holly has a flea (or three.) And before I went with the more traditional flea remedies I decided to boil up a home remedy to try. This homemade recipe requires steeping fresh rosemary which is where the Christmas feeling came in.

And this is what it looked like, not yummy at all!

Here’s how I made the Rosemary Flea Dip

Steep two sprigs of fresh rosemary in boiling water for 25 minutes. Strain the liquid, discard the needles and add up to a 1/2 gallon of room temp water (depending on the size of your dog.) Wait until it is coolish, pour over your puppy (starting at the neck) until she’s soaked then allow your dog to dry naturally.

Holly smelled nice, reminiscent of rosemary potatoes. And she looked happy and flea free.

Then to keep fleas at bay I whipped up an essential oil spray:

Lavender Essential Oil Spray

I added 2 tablespoons of sweet almond oil with 10 drops lavender oil. I spritz Holly’s paws and the base of the tail before we go for a walk.

So far so good….

Of course I’d check with your dog’s veterinarian before trying these. And if you’re not a fan of lavender I’ve heard success stories using other oils like lemon.

Bonus! I sprayed my legs with the oil and it kept bugs away from me during an evening outdoor concert.
